Access Tags
Access Control

Since 25 August tags have been available for collection inside the Club House on late afternoon/early evenings on Thursdays; a number of lunchtimes and other times published and regularly updated on the website; and at every Club Social Evening after the Time-trial.

Collection has now reverted to the default of Tuesday evening Club Social Evenings from about 20:00 until close.

NB: While Mark or any other speaker is addressing the Club, no admin will be done and there will be no dialogue whatsoever. Not only is this a courtesy to the speakers, it is also so that you do not miss any important announcements.

You can get a friend to collect for you; similarly if you can collect (and pay!) for someone else, that would be very helpful.

ACCESS TAG RULES

·      On receipt of a R30 refundable deposit, an access tag will be issued to you; these can be collected at the Club Social Evenings from about 20:00 until close (after Tuesday night time-trials).

·      You must have your access tag swiped for security reasons and for verification of membership on each visit to the Club before proceeding into the Club.

·      The tags provide access to:

§      Secure parking area (Entrance and Exit Gates)

§      Male or Female Changing Rooms

§      Rear Boat Racks (only if you rent one)

·      On swiping the tag, the computerised security system logs the identity of the member and the time of entry. Any unusual patterns of use or unauthorised use are also recorded.

·      If a gate or door has been opened with your tag you are responsible for ensuring that it is closed behind you.

·      If a gate or door is left open (whether by interfering with the self closing mechanism or otherwise) and there is subsequently a problem, the system will show you as the last person accessing the area and you will be called to account.

·      You must not lend your access tag to anyone else as membership is personal and not transferable. If you allow your access tag to be used by anyone else, your membership may be terminated.

·      Your membership may not be traded, transferred or assigned to any other person.

·      All members (including all junior members) must have their own access tag.

·      Access will be denied if membership fees are in arrears.

·      The Club reserves the right to suspend or terminate the membership of any member interfering or tampering with the security access control system.

·      If you've lost your access tag, report it as soon as possible so we can deactivate it. A new one will be issued to you at the going rate.

A gentle reminder from our constitution about non-members using our Club:

GUESTS

23.               (a)    The introduction by Members of Guests, including those who may be eligible for membership, on Club premises is permitted.  Persons eligible for membership, however, may not habitually make use of the Club premises and the Committee may forbid the introducing of any person as a Guest for any reason it considers sufficient.  A Member introducing a Guest shall forthwith enter his or her name and address in a Visitor’s book provided for the purpose.

(b)    Every member introducing a Guest shall be responsible for the conduct of such Guest while in the Club.

2010 Swartland Marathon Race Report and Results
The Swartland Marathon

In keeping with the spirit of the 2010 World Cup, at 10 am on Saturday 19 June the charismatic Peninsula Canoe Club Chairman, Mark Torrington, blew his vuvuzela to signal the start of the 2010 Swartland Canoe Marathon under perfect racing conditions: a full Berg River, brilliant sunshine, blue skies and no wind.

Previously at race registration, the paddlers milling around had rubbed shoulders with a celebrity, namely Riaan Manser, the solo adventurer so well known for his circumnavigation of Madagascar. Further excitement was thrown into the mix for the seeded paddlers when Peninsula Canoe Club’s Graeme Solomon, drained after racing hard the previous weekend at the S.A. Marathon Championships and then a week trying to shake off a cold, arrived at Skooltjie Bridge to register as a last minute entry. Having registered too late for seeding, he was positioned in the last row of the seeded paddlers. From here, he put in a terrific charge to chase after the front seeded paddlers which included race favourite Pierre-André Rabie of the University of Stellenbosch, who had won bronze and gold in the U21 category at the S.A. Champs.

Pierre Andre Rabie - Overall Winner

With a healthy flow of some 25m³/s, Klei rapid (5 km into the race) proved to be a mix of adrenaline and swimmers, with some 40% of the field ending up giving the interior of their boats a good rinse here. Oblivious to the mayhem behind him, Graeme Solomon’s herculean efforts paid off and after Grensplaas he caught up with Rabie and Peninsula Canoe Club’s very promising Alasdair Glass. Drama unfolded when the leading breakaway trio approached a tree-block and Solomon put in a burst to lead the group into the block only to get stuck, showing the others that a better tactic was to do a quick portage which allowed them to then slip past a stranded Solomon.

Pierre-André Rabie then sped off, dropping Alasdair Glass, while Graeme Solomon continued his powerful chase to close the 1 minute and 10 second gap Rabie had opened up.

After Roostuin, Solomon, having dropped Glass in the hard grind, caught Rabie and these two raced together until a tree-block about 6km before Zonquasdrift. Solomon had an unsuccessful seal launch off the block which resulted in a swim, allowing a clean run home for Day 1 Winner Pierre-André Rabie some 2 minutes clear of 2nd placed Solomon.

Graeme Solomon - 2nd Overall

In the Senior Women’s event, Peninsula’s Jemma Hofmeyr’s three swims didn’t make for a happy day of paddling but was enough to see her home well ahead of 2nd placed Robyn Henderson (Milnerton) and Matie’s Kirsten Penderis in 3rd.

Day 2 of the 2010 Swartland Canoe Marathon began with a misty start at Zonquasdrift and Rabie, Solomon, Glass, Peninsula’s Edgar Boehm (jnr), Milnerton’s Chris de Waal and Greg van Heerden formed the lead bunch. Rabie and Solomon soon showed their class and paddled away from them, while Glass encountered problems in the tree blocks in the first 40 minutes and put paid to his hopes for a podium finish.

As the sun burned through the mist to reveal the scenic beauty of the Riebeeck valley with snow-capped mountains in the background, the terrific tussle continued up front with Rabie and Solomon swopping the lead. Solomon led into Black Rock Rapid but then got stuck, holding up Rabie whilst he got away.

Rabie then gave his all to reel in the talented Sub Veteran, and these two played cat and mouse until just after Ysterpen rapid. While desperately trying to shrug off the tenacious Rabie, Solomon ran into serious trouble in a tree-block when the 30m³/s flow very nearly destroyed his boat. Meanwhile Rabie slipped through to gain an unassailable 5-minute lead.

Pierre-André Rabie was then able to romp home to Bridgetown, crossing the finish line with his infectious smile, and assuring his position as the overall winner of the 2010 Swartland Canoe Marathon, with Solomon’s final position 2nd and Edgar Boehm 3rd.

In Day 2 of the Senior Women’s event, Jemma Hofmeyr had a brilliant start then a clean run to finish 17 minutes clear of Robyn Henderson with Kirsten Penderis 3rd overall.

Peninsula Canoe Club is to be commended on a well-organised, rapidly growing K1 canoe marathon which has been designated to be the venue for the 2011 S.A. K1 canoe river championships. This is a clear indication that this event, held along the most technically enjoyable and scenic stretches of the Berg River, has matured to take its well-deserved place on the S.A. canoeing calendar as a premier K1 canoe race.

Chairman’s Chirp

8th June 2010

Yo PCC Member,

Following on from the PCC AGM held earlier this year and the members meeting held last week, a number of motions were put forward. At 8:00pm tonight (after announcements) we will be holding a SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING to discuss and vote on these motions. The meeting agenda and list of motions are printed elsewhere in this chirp. Please make every effort to attend as this is one of the few occasions in the year where you, the paying member, are able to affect the way the club is run and managed.

It’s all systems go for the Swartland Marathon 2010 to be held on 19th and 20th June.  Entries are rolling in.  Organisation is gathering steam and it promises to be a great race. Even the weather seems to playing ball with some good rains forecasted over the next week or so. Thumbs up for the Swartland Shindig at The Barn/Ed’s Diner in Riebeeck Kasteel on the Saturday night, 19 June: free entry to all Swartland paddlers and a R 30 cover charge for all others. We have recently heard that this is the final warm-up gig of the band, Amabhulu, before they play at the FIFA World Cup fan park in Cape Town next week and achieve world fame.  Be there, if only to tell your friends later that you heard the band when they were still unknown.  They have promised a good mix of up-beat music.  Also, Ed has a big screen in Ed’s Diner so you can go there as soon as you come off the water, watch the rugby, eat burgers, buy a classic car and then stay for the Swartland Shindig. Your Swartland entry also gets you a raffle ticket for the Lucky Draw for a chance to win prizes like a brand new River Vajda from Knysna Racing, a voucher for a set of roof racks from HoldFast and lots, lots more! You can also buy further raffle tickets at R 50.00 a pop. So let's pitch, paddle and party!

I would like to make an urgent appeal to any members you could assist us with getting our computer room together. We need 3 members to assist ZSC in a work party to fix a leaking roof as well as we need a donation of an “old” computer and printer (with all the necessary cables), software etc etc.  In order to finally complete the access control, we need a on site computer run the access control software. Another advantage of an on-site computer room would be the ability to run, calculate and print the timetrial, leader board and ranking that same evening for members to view! Now how cuwl would that be?

Club, WCCU and CSA registrations over the next few weeks while Peter Calitz is away is going to handled by myself. Please submit your forms to Peter and make your payment as normal as instructed on the PCC website BUT also send a copy of your registration details to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it if you wish to be registered to take part in any of the WCCU races.

Phew!  Enough of the info stuff already!  – let’s get down to what we all really wanna do! Rumour has it the weed cutter has been working and we might be doing the normal course so  … ARE YOU READY TO RACE AGAIN ?

Yo PCC Member,

Congrats to Pete and Alexa Cole - baby son was born 24th May – weighing in at 3.8km (big balls apparently!). Look out for Jarad Cole on the Junior Leaderboard next week although Pete might just pull him from the race if he does not show the right kind of commitment in the gym this week!

Our hardworking Registration office, Peter Calitz will be away overseas from Saturday 5 June and will be back on Monday 12 July. So, if you have not registered yet, please try and do so THIS week. Thereafter you most likely will have to wait until Peter get back.
