REPORT – ADT Marina 16 W.C.C.U. canoe race, Saturday 9th April, 2011. |

History was made at the annual Marina 16 canoe race, held on Saturday 09th April, on Zandvlei and the canals of Marina da Gama and hosted by the local club, Peninsula Canoe Club, when not only was the first craft home a surf ski, but the second as well. The organizers decided not to split the field into different classes – i.e. K1’s, K2’s and other craft and perhaps on the day, the strong winds which whipped up a lively chop on the vlei (not too bad in the canals) and had running swells, was to the advantage of the longer, sit-on-top skis over the normally faster (on flat water) and lighter K1’s, especially those in the hands of paddlers of the ilk of Rice and Schilperoodt. |

In addition, there is an updated WCCU calendar, version 3 on the website based on changes at the AGM/SGM which a lot of paddlers have not downloaded and this is causing a lot of confusion so pls make sure you have the latest version on hand. |

A howling South Easter greeted the first of the W.C.C.U. events of the year - the 'fun' event know as the Twilight 12 - designed to introduce beginners to canoeing to a racing format and in most cases, accompanied by experienced paddlers. As befits such an event, all prizes are awarded only to these beginners.
