For those who perhaps have not seen this, apart from the resultant controversy, what I find very striking is the incredible physicality and unbelievable boat skills of both crews! An amazing set of pics …. http://www.paddle365.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=377&Itemid=100 Shaun Rubenstein and Michael Arthur: PCC are extremely fortunate to have these two top international canoeists as members of the club. Both have as their long-term plan, a medal at the London Olympics in 2012, and in the short term, the various World Cup and World Championship canoe sprint competitions that will take them through to London. The reason they are training in the Cape (Shaun is a Gauteng-er and Michael hails from KZN), is because of the U.C.T. Discovery Health Sports Science Institute in Newlands, Cape Town and all that it is able to offer elite athletes as these two are. Marina da Gama (and Thibault Canal where this pic was taken) has been chosen because no matter what the wind is doing, this stretch of water is almost always protected. Both Shaun and Michael have extensive and brilliant paddling CV’s ; Shaun Rubenstein – World Canoe Marathon Champion K1 (single canoe), 2006. Silver medals (K2) at the World Canoe Marathon Championships in 2006 and 2009 and in 2008, a Beijing Olympian. Silver medallist sprint World Cup, K2, 200m, bronze K1 500m (2009 and 2006 respectively), 6th K2 200m @ World Sprint Championships, 2009. Michael Arthur – World Cup silver medal K2 200m, 6th World Sprint Championships, K2 200m, 2009. The other paddler in the foreground of the pic is the German paddler, Ronny Rauhe (current World Champion in K1 200m and 500m sprints), taking the opportunity to train on protected waters in South Africa and in warm conditions – we all know just how bad the European winter has been!. PCC welcome them both to Cape Town and wish them well in their sporting endeavours. Perhaps we can convince these two exceptional athletes to come have a chat to us one Tuesday evening! I unfortunately I will not be at the club on Tuesday – taking Greg “Kelly Slater” Torrington on a surfing trip to JBay!!! See ya on the water |
